History

Society was founded by prof. dr.sc. Franjo Hanaman who had become, after graduating on Polytechnic in Vienna, world recognized innovator of the first applied light bulb with metal (wolfram) string, working as an assisstant with Alexander Justt. In the year 1922 he had been called to take a professorship of anorganic chemistry at the Tecnical faculty in Zagreb. He initiatied, in 1928, the founding of the Chemist's Club within Society of Yugoslavian Engineers and Architects, and this Society had been derived from The Club of Engineers and Technicians founded in Zagreb even in 1878. The first president had been prof. dr.sc. Franjo Hanaman. Club had been formed with the aim for advancement of the chemical engineers' activities in industry and the university. At this time, activity of the Club had been the organizing of the lectures and meetings of chemical engineers and also to encourage its memebers to publish in Arhiv za kemiju i farmaciju (Archive for Chemistry and Pharmacy) which had changed its name into Arhiv za kemiju i kemijsku tehnologiju (Archive for Chemistry and Chemical Technology) in 1937. and, in 1939, into Arhiv za kemiju i tehnologiju (Archive for Chemistry and Technology). Editor had been Franjo Hanaman from 1934 to 1939. Participants in the activities of the club were professors of Technical faculty - for example – prof. Richard Podhorsky, prof. Matija Krajčinović, prof. Vladimir Njegovan and others. The Chemist's Club also supported the founding of the Department of Chemistry on the Technical faculty in Zagreb. Chemist's club was active until 1939. During the hard years of WWII, the members of the club were active within Croatian Chemical Society which had this name from 1939 and they upheld its activities until the end of the war when, on the initiative of the Society of Engineers and Technicians of Croatia, the Section of Chemists had been found in 1947. The first president was prof. dr.sc. Ivan Brihta, honorary lecturer of the Tecnical Faculty in Zagreb who held the courses Tecnical Catalysis and Technology of the Catalytic Processes. Section had at this time 109 members. Section had organized lectures and consultations and supported the journal Arhiv za kemiju i kemijsku tehnologiju (Archive for Chemistry and Chemical Technology) which had become the joint bulletin of the Section and the Croatian Chemical Society. The Section has begun to publish its own bulletin Kemija u industriji (Chemistry in Industry) in 1952 which is still being published today. The Section ceased to exist when the Society of Chemists and Technologists of Croatia was founded on July 6th 1953. The first president had been Jovan Dugošević. The Society continued with the activities of the Section. Beside lectures, colloquiums and consultations, it promoted the application of chemistry in the industry. Regional societies are founded within the Society in Zagreb, Rijeka, Split etc. On the 5th regular meeting of the General Assembly, on March 18th 1962 in Zagreb, it was decided that the Society should be transformed into the Association. New Statute was brought and the new name was the Association of Chemists and Technologists of Croatia. The first president was prof. dr.sc. Marijan Lačan, professor of organic chemistry at the Department for Biotechnology at the Technological Faculty in Zagreb. statute of the Association has been changed several times: February 10th 1967, November 10th 1972, July 12th 1980, July 25th 1992. By this Statute the Association of Chemists and Technologists of Croatia has changed the name into Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers and Technologists (HDKI – short for the name in Croatian). In the year 1993 HKDI has become the member of European Federation for Chemical Engineering and the member of European Polymere Federation. Accepting the Statute on April 24th 1998 the Society has become a unique organization. Within Association of the Chemists and Technologists of Croatia there are regional societies in Belišće, Koprivnica, Kutina, Požega, Rijeka, Split and Zagreb and the society of Borovo is associated to the HKDI Zagreb because of well known state of affairs. There are also professional sections.

Organization

Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers and Technologists (HKDI – short for Croatian name - Hrvatsko društvo kemijskih inženjera i tehnologa) is a unique association of chemists, chemical engineers and technologists, persons and legal subjects, which functions in the Repulic of Croatia. The seat of the HKDI is in Zagreb, Berislavićeva 6 tel: +385 1 4872 499. HKDI gathers together chemists, chemical engineers and technologists in the aim of improving chemical and chemical engineering professions and also the similar professions. It is permanently acting on the improvement of natural and technical sciences and their application in practice. It is also always in contact with the development in science and technology; it provides the opinions on technical and technological solutions to problems and about the planning of building, regulating and protecting the environment. It encourages all kinds of engineering activities aiming to optimization of technical and economical development, welfare, security, health, environmental protection and good society. It helps and encourages engineers in professional work and in organizing corresponding forms of professional education. It nourishes and develops the ethics of engineers' profession. It encourages, edits and publishes scientific and professional publications. Its goals and aims HKDI relizes through organizing congresses, meetings, conferences, seminars, consultations, colloquiums, round tables, lectures, discussions, talks and by other means of getting the members together.
